Sheikh “ Muhammad Mutawali Al Sharawi “ (Egypt 1911– 1998) the extremely popular & prominent Top Egyptian & Arab Islamic scholar talked about this issue saying that it is a misconception that owning or accompanying dogs is not allowed in Islam or repels angels & such superstitions or any alike hadith or narrations are baseless . Definitely owning & accompanying dogs are allowable in Islam & ALLAH has mentioned a companion dog in Quran as a companion to the pious righteous cave people Q 18;13 & Q18;22

translation “Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.–They will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog – guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog.”——-

However , since the dog saliva can contain microbes & the dog may lick non clean ground , thus it has been deemed by scholars that the muslim needs to wipe by water where the dog licked him or redo ablution before prayer
